Abstract

This research aims to (a) determine the factors that cause students’ learning outcomes to decline in sociology subjects and (b) to find out the efforts made by teachers to improve sociology learning outcomes at SMA Negeri 2 Kupang. The approach used in this research is qualitative. The research subjects using purposive sampling techniques comprised principals, teachers, and students at SMA Negeri 2 Kupang. Research data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. This research data were analysed using the interactive analysis technique of the Miles and Hebermans model. This research found several findings. First, the cause of the decline in students’ learning outcomes in sociology learning at SMA Negeri 2 Kupang has not been optimized properly. There are still several obstacles, namely factors within the students, where students often do not comply with school rules. For example, during lessons, there are students who lack focus and go in and out of class. Second, family environmental factors also influence the decline in student learning outcomes, such as economic factors that are less supportive and lack motivational support from parents. Third, Community environmental factors, such as what students do outside the school environment, influence the decline in students’ learning outcomes. The efforts made by teachers to improve sociology learning outcomes at SMA Negeri 2 Kupang include giving assignments, group discussions, and via the Internet. Thus, the decline in students’ learning outcomes can be seen in students' daily interactions.
